I want to paint the inside of my horse trough, what kind of paint should I be using?
I haven’t made it into the 21st century yet, so I am still using those metal, galvanized troughs for my horses. As metal will do, they are starting to rust really bad, and of course, it’s on the inside where the horses get their water from. I am thinking that I want to scrub them down and use some spray paint to help protect the metal, but I don’t know what kind to use. Do you now of anything that will seal and protect? If that’s too much to hope for, how about just cover the rust up then?

Actually, that’s not too tough to get taken care of. You’ll find that no one makes a paint specifically for horse troughs. The real question here is will regular rust-preventative type spray paints harm my horses when they drink water sitting in a trough that’s been painted over.
Obviously you want to take care of this problem before it gets too bad. My Sister-In-Law waited too long and she ended up spending a lot of money to replace tanks she could have saved with a little spray paint. Actually there is a paint that is designed to be used right over rust. It is VHT SP229 Rust Convertor Can – 11 oz.“>. Not only can you just spray it right on the rust, it will also stop further rust from forming. This is actually a much better solution than the other kinds of spray paint that require all that prep work. It’s priced right too with free shipping and comes with a 30 day guarantee.
No matter what you end up buying to solve this problem, make sure you do NOT buy indoor/outdoor paint. This kind of paint is not meant to be used in environments where you want to hold/store water. This stuff will allow poisons to enter the water.
